Mercedes-AMG F1 driver George Russell collaborates with IWC to launch two new pilot's watches
Black ceramic cases and the iconic blue of George Russell's F1 helmet add vibrancy to the Top Gun limited edition automatic and chronograph watches.
British driver George Russell, currently driving for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, joined IWC as a brand ambassador in 2022. Stepping down from the F1 wheel, he turned to design, collaborating with IWC's creative team to create the new limited edition pilot's watches. The watches are adorned with the iconic blue from Russell's helmet. Both new chronograph and date display watches are from IWC's "Top Gun" collection, known for its tactical, modern military-inspired style. Both watches feature black ceramic cases with blue accents and are limited to 1063 pieces.
Since 2013, IWC has been the official engineering partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, releasing several AMG-themed watches. At first glance, these new timepieces might be confused with previous Pilot's Watch Mark XX and Mercedes-AMG Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 models. However, these new automatic chronographs are inspired by the brand's high-tech "Top Gun" collection, a sub-collection of the Pilot's cheap luxury watches series, characterized by a matte military-inspired stealth design and innovative corrosion-resistant case materials such as titanium, ceramic, and the brand's exclusive Ceratanium®.
This watch incorporates Russell's iconic blue racing helmet element into the wrist, with a striking blue contrast design on the dial and strap. Another element closely associated with Russell is the number 63, said to be the first number his brother Benjamin used on go-karts in the 2000s, later becoming the "family racing number," which now appears on his matte blue helmet.
This Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 George Russell features a 41.9 mm x 15.5 mm black zirconium oxide ceramic case, water-resistant to 100 meters. The pushers and crown are crafted from IWC's exclusive Ceratanium® material—a perfect blend of titanium and ceramic. The iconic IWC sapphire crystal effectively protects the matte black dial even in the event of a sudden drop in air pressure. The matte black dial is adorned with Russell's signature blue hour markers, numerals, and inscriptions, and the hands are coated with the same blue Super-LumiNova luminescent material. This timepiece is powered by the 69380 automatic movement, offering a 46-hour power reserve. It features a column-wheel chronograph function displaying 30-minute and 12-hour chronographs, small seconds, a double window at 3 o'clock displaying the day and date, as well as hours, minutes, and central chronograph seconds.
The Pilot's Watch 41 George Russell, water-resistant to 100 meters, features a black zirconium oxide ceramic case measuring 41 mm x 11.4 mm. It is equipped with a Ceratanium crown, a soft iron inner case, and a fixed, anti-slip crystal. Like the chronograph, the black dial is decorated with George Russell blue hour markers, numerals, and inscriptions, and the hour and minute hands are coated with blue Super-LumiNova luminescent material. The watch is powered by the IWC 32112 automatic movement, a robust and durable automatic movement with a pawl winding system, offering a power reserve of up to 120 hours (5 days). In addition to hour, minute, and date displays, it also features a stop-seconds function.
